The color is checked in order to determine if it is being played on a console with the Animal Crossing special edition Joy-Cons, in which case the player receives a replica of the special edition Switch in a separate letter. Curiously, the game does not match the color of the Joy-Cons attached to the console for this item.The Switch item has neon blue and red Joy-Cons by default, but they can be changed to gray once furniture customization is unlocked. A free Nintendo Switch furniture item is given to the player in the mail after updating.

These characters appear after the version number displayed in-game (on the title screen) while a real-time-locked event is in progress they therefore require the console's clock to be synced with Nintendo Network.
